The conference, organized by ADUC, took place from March 2–4, 2026 in Essen and brought together researchers from across the chemical sciences to discuss current developments in chemistry research and education.

In his presentation, Endo highlighted approaches for structuring, managing, and analyzing synthesis data for metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) using data models, supporting more efficient and reproducible materials research within CRC 1333.

The CRC 1333 was represented by a number of speakers who presented on the key topic “Properties and Processes under Confinement”:

• Dr. Johanna Bruckner “Tailor-made mesoporous support materials for catalysis in confinement on the example of the CO hydrogenation reaction”
• Prof. Niels Hansen “Leveraging molecular simulations to corroborate confinement effects observed in mesoporous materials”
• Dr. Julian Fischer “Small-Angle Scattering Analysis of Catalyst-Supporting Ionic Liquid Films in Ordered Mesoporous Silica”

Doctoral researcher Selina Itzigehl presented a poster on “Confinement-Controlled Surface Acidity in Ordered Mesoporous Aluminosilicates”.

The diverse contributions from CRC 1333 highlighted the central role of confinement effects in modern physical chemistry and fostered lively interdisciplinary exchange throughout the conference.

In the CRC 1333, all doctoral and postdoctoral researchers have the opportunity to receive additional funding for a research stay abroad up to three months by applying to the CRC board. The aim is to promote the international competence and early independence of our early-career researchers.

The research group of Prof. Burés is widely recognized for the development of the Variable Time Normalization Analysis (VTNA) method, a graphical tool that allows chemists to determine reaction orders directly from experimental kinetic data without prior mechanistic assumptions.

Alexander’s work aimed to link apparent reaction orders with mechanistic pathways, providing insights that could complement DFT simulations and strengthen the interpretation of kinetic experiments.

In an interview, Alex gave us some insights into his stay:

What was special about the work of the Burés Group?

This stay allowed me to view DFT interpretations not just as simulations but also in the context of experimental kinetics, which is very valuable for our work at the CRC 1333. The working group was very welcoming, even though their experimental work was primarily in the laboratory while my work was mainly office-based. We met regularly at group meetings and also enjoyed some activities together outside of work.

How did you like Tarragona? What were some highlights for you?
Tarragona is a historic university city on the Catalonian coast, renowned for its rich Roman heritage. Its coastal location offers a perfect balance between exploring culture and enjoying the natural surroundings. While the winter weather is often quite windy, that only added to the experience. During my time in Spain, I also visited nearby Barcelona and spent time with family and friends in Madrid. My Spanish language skills proved very helpful, and it was wonderful to have the opportunity to practice speaking the language.

Do you have any recommendations for someone looking to do a research stay?
For doctoral researchers considering a stay abroad, I recommend not only relying on existing collaborations, but also proactively reaching out to potential host groups whose work you find interesting and inspiring.

Combining insights from business psychology with practical tools, the workshop addressed common challenges in the doctoral journey. Participants explored strategies to overcome writer’s block, reduce procrastination, and create conditions for focused, productive work. Additional topics included setting priorities, using personal strengths effectively, and developing techniques for stress regulation and mental recovery.

The interactive format—featuring short inputs, reflection exercises, and group exchange—allowed participants to connect the content directly to their own work and share experiences across disciplines.

The meeting covered the full range of porous materials research—from synthesis and characterization to applications in catalysis, adsorption, energy storage, and process development.

CRC 1333 supported this year’s conference and contributed with a dedicated session highlighting current research within the Collaborative Research Centre. The conference was opened by CRC 1333 project leaders Prof. Bettina Lotsch and Prof. Simon Krause alongside Prof. Mika Lindén from the University of Ulm.

In the session “SFB-1333 – Catalysis in Confinement,” chaired by Jun.-Prof. Dr. Kenichi Endo (University of Stuttgart), CRC researchers presented recent results:

• Dr. Johanna Bruckner (University of Stuttgart) discussed the rational design of ordered mesoporous materials with tunable pore size and surface acidity via direct liquid crystal templating.
• Dr. Patrick Probst (University of Stuttgart) presented work on ring-expansion metathesis polymerization under confinement and the control of molecular weight in cyclic polymers.
• Samuel Van Gele (Max-Planck Institute for Solid State Research) explored structural effects of post-synthetic linkage modification in COF-366-Co catalysts.

The conference provided an excellent platform for exchange within the German zeolite and porous materials community, and we thank the organizers and participants for the stimulating discussions.
