From May 20-22, 2026, researchers from the CataLysis Network gathered in Weimar for the annual International CataLysis Conference. Once again, the event provided a vibrant platform for scientific exchange, interdisciplinary discussions, and networking among the participating Collaborative Research Centers (CRCs), Transregios, and research initiatives.

This year’s conference brought together six major DFG-funded catalysis consortia: our CRC 1333, CRC/TRR 247, CRC 1441 TrackAct, CRC 1633, CRC 325, and the CataLight Coordination initiative. In addition, participants were introduced to CRC 1615 SMART Reactors and the research initiative Iron, upgraded!. A total of 186 scientists attended the meeting, making the conference one of the largest gatherings of the German catalysis community.

The scientific program featured six outstanding keynote lectures delivered by internationally renowned researchers

Prof. Dr. Mircea Dincă “MOF-Enabled Catalysis for Commodity Chemicals”

Dr. Vincent Artero “From Proton Relays to Microenvironments: Harnessing PCET processes in molecular catalysis for H₂ and CO₂ Conversion”

Prof. Dr. Ming-Yu Ngai “Excited-State Catalysis in Organic Synthesis”

Dr. Valerie Briois “Hyperspectral Full Field Quick EXAFS Imaging for Looking at the Dynamic of Spatial Heterogeneities along a Catalyst Bed”

Prof. Dr. Ive Hermans “TS-1: The Gift that Keeps on Giving”

Prof. Dr. Ken Sakai “Molecular Catalysis of Water Splitting and CO₂ Reduction”

In addition to the keynote lectures, the conference featured 26 presentations from the participating CRCs and nearly 100 poster contributions. These sessions highlighted the breadth of current catalysis research and stimulated lively discussions across disciplinary boundaries.

A special highlight of the conference was the poster award competition. To encourage cross-consortium exchange, poster presentations were evaluated by members of a different CRC than their own. The CRC 1333 was evaluated by the CataLight initative und vice-versa. Yannick Weidemann, CRC 1333 doctoral researcher won the prize for this poster on “Spectroelectrochemical Evidence on COF induced Confinement of Water” for the CRC 1333. We warmly congratulate him and all the other winners on this achievement.

The International CataLysis Conference once again demonstrated the strength of Germany’s catalysis research network. By bringing together researchers from diverse fields and career stages, the meeting fostered new collaborations, strengthened existing connections, and provided fresh perspectives on the future of catalysis research.

CRC 1333 would like to thank all speakers and participants for making this year’s conference such a successful and memorable event. We are already looking forward to the next gathering of the CataLysis Network!

Alexander Beck, CRC 1333 doctoral researcher in Project C03 in Prof. Johannes Kästner group, recently completed a three-month research stay at the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ) in Tarragona, Spain, hosted by Prof. Jordi Burés. His visit, from December 2025 to February 2026, focused on deepening the understanding of the relationship between apparent reaction orders and the actual mechanisms underlying chemical reactions.

In the CRC 1333, all doctoral and postdoctoral researchers have the opportunity to receive additional funding for a research stay abroad up to three months by applying to the CRC board. The aim is to promote the international competence and early independence of our early-career researchers.

The research group of Prof. Burés is widely recognized for the development of the Variable Time Normalization Analysis (VTNA) method, a graphical tool that allows chemists to determine reaction orders directly from experimental kinetic data without prior mechanistic assumptions.

Alexander’s work aimed to link apparent reaction orders with mechanistic pathways, providing insights that could complement DFT simulations and strengthen the interpretation of kinetic experiments.

In an interview, Alex gave us some insights into his stay:

What was special about the work of the Burés Group?

This stay allowed me to view DFT interpretations not just as simulations but also in the context of experimental kinetics, which is very valuable for our work at the CRC 1333. The working group was very welcoming, even though their experimental work was primarily in the laboratory while my work was mainly office-based. We met regularly at group meetings and also enjoyed some activities together outside of work.

How did you like Tarragona? What were some highlights for you?
Tarragona is a historic university city on the Catalonian coast, renowned for its rich Roman heritage. Its coastal location offers a perfect balance between exploring culture and enjoying the natural surroundings. While the winter weather is often quite windy, that only added to the experience. During my time in Spain, I also visited nearby Barcelona and spent time with family and friends in Madrid. My Spanish language skills proved very helpful, and it was wonderful to have the opportunity to practice speaking the language.

Do you have any recommendations for someone looking to do a research stay?
For doctoral researchers considering a stay abroad, I recommend not only relying on existing collaborations, but also proactively reaching out to potential host groups whose work you find interesting and inspiring.

Thank you for all the insights, Alex!

Doctoral research often involves high levels of responsibility, complex demands, and uncertain structures—factors that can lead to writer’s block, procrastination, and stress. To support its early-career researchers, the CRC 1333 recently hosted the mental health workshop “Pursuing your PhD with clarity, joy, and focus” in English, led by Silvia Balaban from Recalibration.

Combining insights from business psychology with practical tools, the workshop addressed common challenges in the doctoral journey. Participants explored strategies to overcome writer’s block, reduce procrastination, and create conditions for focused, productive work. Additional topics included setting priorities, using personal strengths effectively, and developing techniques for stress regulation and mental recovery.
