<p>As part of the TRACES initiative at the University of Stuttgart, the scholarship will support the further development of Misha’s startup idea in sustainable water treatment. The program is funded by the German Federal Government and co-financed by the European Social Fund Plus (ESF Plus).</p>

<p>Severin Haid from project <strong><a href="https://www.crc1333.de/research/projects/reaction-mechanisms-qm-mm-dft/">C04</a></strong> and Akash Deshpande from <strong><a href="https://www.crc1333.de/research/projects/start-up-funding-project-by-jun-prof-dr-kenichi-endo-in-crc-1333/">Seed 06</a> </strong>were elected as new CRC 1333 doctoral representatives during the Summer School in September 2025. <p>We are delighted to announce that Dr. Felix Fischer, postdoctoral researcher in project <a href="https://www.crc1333.de/research/projects/advanced-hard-x-ray-spectroscopy/">C10</a> has been appointed Junior Professor (W1ttW2) for Inorganic Coordination Chemistry and X-ray Spectroscopy at Paderborn University as of October 1, 2025.</p>



<p>Felix joined the CRC 1333 as a doctoral researcher during the first funding period and continued as a postdoctoral researcher in the second period. His appointment marks an exciting next step in his academic career — and a success story for CRC 1333’s early-career researcher community!</p>



<p>Beginning with his Junior Professorship on October 1, 2025, Felix intends to integrate his expertise in coordination chemistry, catalysis and X-ray spectroscopy to advance the investigation of the structurally, (photo)chemically, and (photo)catalytically intriguing class of phosphaalkene transition-metal complexes. His research focuses on the catalytic activity of phosphaalkene complexes of nickel, cobalt, iron, ruthenium and bismuth. Targeted transformations include both reactions previously known for precious-metal-based phosphaalkene complexes and transformations characteristic of the mentioned transition metals.</p>



<p>Using photochemical analytical methods, he aims not only to characterize the ground states of these complexes but also to identify the relevant transition states in (photo)catalytic reactions by time-resolved UV/Vis spectroscopy. In addition, static and time-resolved X-ray spectroscopic measurements employing hard X-rays at synchrotron radiation sources will be conducted. The unique value of X-ray spectroscopy lies in its ability to probe samples in an element-specific manner, independent of their aggregation state and under nearly any experimental condition. This enables both <em>ex situ</em> investigations of crystalline, amorphous or immobilized samples and <em>in situ</em> analyses of dissolved species</p>

<p>The Summer School began with a visit to <a href="https://careers.evonik.com/de">Evonik Industries</a> in Rheinfelden, where participants gained an in-depth look into the company’s research and production activities. After an introduction of the CRC 1333 by doctoral researcher Selina Itzigehl and a safety briefing by Evonik, company representatives provided an overview of their work on silane production, building protection materials, and research and development in functional materials.<br><br data-start="1067" data-end="1070">A guided tour through the production plants offered fascinating insights into large-scale industrial processes, followed by discussions with employees from R&amp;D and sales. The visit concluded with an open Q&amp;A session about career opportunities for young scientists.</p>

<p>After traveling to Rottweil, Germany’s oldest town, the program continued with a series of talks and workshops. The morning opened with a lecture by Muneshwar Nandeshwar on “Cooperative Catalysis Under Confinement” and a presentation by Sofia Kolin on “Molecular determinations of solvent nanoseparation by nanoporous carbon materials.”</p>



<p>Two poster sessions provided opportunities for lively discussions, while Fabian Heck’s Sorption Workshop on “Gas Adsorption: Why We Do Not Measure BET” invited hands-on learning and debate. In the afternoon, participants explored Rottweil during an outdoor escape game or a photo challenge before gathering again for a quiz night organized by Liam Rautenbach.</p>

<p>The final day focused on career skills with an interactive CV and networking workshop by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rtta.net/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rob Thompson</a>. <p>We are delighted to announce that Deven Estes, Deputy Spokesperson &amp; Principal Investigator (PI) in the CRC 1333, has been appointed from junior professor to professor last week by Rector Prof. Peter Middendorf.</p>



<p>Deven has joined the University of Stuttgart in late 2019 and is an expert in surface chemistry on metal oxides, specifically in the selective synthesis of well-defined model catalysts on metal oxide surfaces through the techniques of Surface Organometallic Chemistry (SOMC) and Molecular Heterogeneous Catalysis (MHC) at the Institute of Technical Chemistry.&nbsp;</p>



<p>We warmly congratulate him on this achievement and wish him every success in his future career.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-left">The annual CRC 1333 Status Meeting took place in Bad Wimpfen from May 5-7, 2025.&nbsp; All members of the CRC gathered for this three-day event, which serves as a central forum to present current research, exchange ideas and, disuss strategies and expectations for the continued development of the CRC 1333. This year’s seminar naturally placed particular emphasis on the expectations and plans for the upcoming third funding period.</p>



<p>Over the course of the seminar, each research team from the areas <a href="https://www.crc1333.de/research/materials/">A – Materials</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.crc1333.de/research/area-b-catalysis/">B – Catalysis</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.crc1333.de/research/area-c-analysis-theory-simulation/">C – Analysis, Theory and Simulation</a>&nbsp;as well as&nbsp;<a href="https://www.crc1333.de/research/projects/f-a-i-r-data-management-in-molecular-heterogeneous-catalysis-inf/">FAIR data management (INF)</a> had the opportunity to share and discuss their latest results.</p>

<p>In lieu of a traditional scientific keynote, we invited <a href="https://gender.univie.ac.at/en/about-us/lehrende/meike-lauggas/">Dr. Maike Lauggas</a>, an expert from the Department of Gender Studies at the University of Vienna, who joined us virtually and conducted an interactive workshop on the topic of &#8220;To be or not to be biased&#8221;; reflecting our growing commitment to diversity training within the CRC 1333.</p>

<p>During the poster sessions on the first two days, our doctoral researchers presented their current work and received valuable feedback from peers and professors alike. In addition, the CRC 1333 INF team organized daily exhibitions during the coffee breaks, highlighting the FAIRSynthesis, FAIRVibSpec and Thermodynamic parameter estimation of linker and catalyst effects in pore-immobilized systems.</p>

<p>While he will be leaving the University of Stuttgart, he will continue as PI of subproject <a href="https://www.crc1333.de/research/projects/regulation-of-molecular-heterogeneous-organocatalysis-by-dynamic-confinement-in-soft-porous-crystals/">A08</a>, together with <a href="https://www.ioc.uni-stuttgart.de/en/research/ak-laschat/">Prof. Sabine Laschat</a> and <a href="https://www.simtech.uni-stuttgart.de/exc/people/Pluhackova-00001/">Dr. Krystina Pluhackova.</a></p>

<p>The German-South African Public Engagement Exchange (PEX), launching this month, is a new initiative funded by the BMBF and hosted by the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin&#8217;s Public Engagement and Impact Unit. PEX is a distinctive leadership program that connects researchers and public engagement professionals to enhance science and empower society. The program will bring together 40 researchers from South Africa and Germany in an innovative leadership and innovation initiative focused on public engagement. This framework fosters interactions between science and society, creating mutual benefits that strengthen both fields.</p>

<p>From September 30 to October 2, 2024,&nbsp; the CRC 1333 Summer School took place in Überlingen at the beautiful Lake Constance. Our doctoral students meet once a year for three days to share their latest research results, find potential new collaboration partners for their projects and of course to socialize and network.</p>

<p>The program included three workshops, organized by different groups of doctoral student on the topics of Science Communication, DFT Basics and Phyton Basics. There were also several presentations giving an overview of the students’ current work and providing information about possible collaborations.</p>



<p>A highlight of the three days was a guest lecture by&nbsp;<a class="external external_icon" href="http://iqcc.udg.edu/portfolio/xavi-ribas/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Prof. Xavi Ribas</a> from the University of Girona, Spain on the topic of “<strong>Supramolecular Nanocapsules as Masks for Regioselective Functionalization of Fullerenes”.</strong>&nbsp;Many thanks to him for the truly inspiring talk and to everyone for the lively discussion.</p>
