<p>Doctoral research often involves high levels of responsibility, complex demands, and uncertain structures—factors that can lead to writer’s block, procrastination, and stress. To support its early-career researchers, the CRC 1333 recently hosted the mental health workshop <em>“<strong>Pursuing your PhD with clarity, joy, and focus</strong>”</em> in English, led by Silvia Balaban from <a href="https://www.recalibration.de/">Recalibration</a>.</p>



<p>Combining insights from business psychology with practical tools, the workshop addressed common challenges in the doctoral journey. Participants explored strategies to overcome writer’s block, reduce procrastination, and create conditions for focused, productive work. Additional topics included setting priorities, using personal strengths effectively, and developing techniques for stress regulation and mental recovery.</p>

<p>From February 25–27, 2026, the <a href="https://dechema.de/en/dzt37.html">37th German Zeolite Conference (DZT)</a> took place at the Max-Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart. The conference was organized by DECHEMA e.V. and co-hosted by Ulm University and the Max-Planck Institute for Solid State Research.</p>



<p>The meeting covered the full range of porous materials research—from synthesis and characterization to applications in catalysis, adsorption, energy storage, and process development.</p>



<p>CRC 1333 supported this year’s conference and contributed with a dedicated session highlighting current research within the Collaborative Research Centre. The conference was opened by CRC 1333 project leaders Prof. Bettina Lotsch and Prof. Simon Krause alongside Prof. Mika Lindén from the University of Ulm.</p>

<p>In the session “SFB-1333 – Catalysis in Confinement,” chaired by Jun.-Prof. Dr. Kenichi Endo (University of Stuttgart), CRC researchers presented recent results:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Dr. Johanna Bruckner</strong> (University of Stuttgart) discussed the rational design of ordered mesoporous materials with tunable pore size and surface acidity via direct liquid crystal templating.</li>



<li><strong>Dr. Patrick Probst</strong> (University of Stuttgart) presented work on ring-expansion metathesis polymerization under confinement and the control of molecular weight in cyclic polymers.</li>



<li><strong>Samuel Van Gele</strong> (Max-Planck Institute for Solid State Research) explored structural effects of post-synthetic linkage modification in COF-366-Co catalysts.</li>

<p><br>Sahar’s research focuses on the synthesis and characterization of photoactive metal–organic frameworks for solar energy conversion and storage. She holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Shahid Beheshti University and a master’s degree in inorganic chemistry from the University of Tehran, Iran.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.ipoc.uni-stuttgart.de/pcmc/" type="link" id="https://www.ipoc.uni-stuttgart.de/pcmc/">The Endo Group</a> has recently installed a new piece of equipment: the Leica EM CPD300 Critical Point Dryer. This instrument enables the gentle removal of solvent molecules from porous materials without inducing pore collapse caused by capillary forces.</p>

<p>The process relies on the use of supercritical CO₂, where the absence of surface tension allows drying to occur without mechanical stress on the material. This is particularly advantageous for mechanically sensitive porous systems such as certain metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and gels.</p>



<p>The same Leica EM CPD300 model has also been successfully used by the Lotsch Group at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research, underlining its suitability for advanced materials research.</p>



<p>The availability of this instrument further strengthens the capabilities for the preparation and characterization of delicate porous materials within the CRC network.</p>

<p><br>Manpreet completed his Ph.D. in India, where his research focused on porous crystalline functional materials for environmental remediation. Prior to joining the department, he was a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow in Japan, conducting research on functional porous materials, particularly the use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for quantum information systems. His previous research experience includes heterogeneous catalysis, fluorescence-based chemical sensing, and the synthesis of porous adsorbents for selective CO₂ capture.<br><br>At CRC 1333, Manpreet is currently working on the development of MOF-based catalysts for the conversion of carbon dioxide (CO₂) into methanol. His research involves the development and modification of existing MOFs and COFs to achieve highly efficient CO₂ conversion. The overarching goal is to improve efficiency and selectivity in catalytic pathways under milder reaction conditions. Manpreet brings extensive expertise in MOF structures that regulate active sites, adsorption behavior, and catalytic performance. His earlier work bridges CO₂ capture and non-redox fixation into cyclic carbonates, offering integrated solutions for carbon recycling and sustainable chemistry. His current research aims to further enhance the applicability of functional polymeric and hybrid materials in catalysis and environmental remediation, with a particular emphasis on CO₂ fixation.<br><br>Welcome to the the CRC 133, Manpreet! <p><a href="https://wissenschaft-im-dialog.de/forum-wissenschaftskommunikation/">Forum Wissenschaftskommunikation</a>, organized by <a href="https://wissenschaft-im-dialog.de/">Wissenschaft im Dialog</a> and the largest conference on science communication in the German-speaking world, took place on December 3 &amp; 4, 2025 in Stuttgart. It brought together around 750 participants for two inspiring days of exchange, new ideas, and fresh perspectives on science engagement — with artificial intelligence in science communication emerging as a key topic throughout the event.</p>



<p>The CRC 1333 was represented in several ways at this year’s Forum Wissenschaftskommunikation:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>At the Universität Stuttgart booth, connecting with conference participants.</li>



<li>Through a poster and talk by Yasemin Polikar, MBA, on engaging new target groups in SciComm, featuring our exhibition “Was kann Katalyse?” as a hands-on example.</li>



<li>With an interactive workshop by Samuel Van Gele, in collaboration with Juliane Braig from the theatre group <a href="https://kanonenfutter-impro.de/">Kanonenfutter</a> and Isabella Kessel from the Landeshauptstadt Stuttgart, exploring ImprovTheatre as an innovative approach to science communication.</li>
