From February 25–27, 2026, the 37th German Zeolite Conference (DZT) took place at the Max-Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart. The conference was organized by DECHEMA e.V. and co-hosted by Ulm University and the Max-Planck Institute for Solid State Research.

The meeting covered the full range of porous materials research—from synthesis and characterization to applications in catalysis, adsorption, energy storage, and process development.

CRC 1333 supported this year’s conference and contributed with a dedicated session highlighting current research within the Collaborative Research Centre. The conference was opened by CRC 1333 project leaders Prof. Bettina Lotsch and Prof. Simon Krause alongside Prof. Mika Lindén from the University of Ulm.

In the session “SFB-1333 – Catalysis in Confinement,” chaired by Jun.-Prof. Dr. Kenichi Endo (University of Stuttgart), CRC researchers presented recent results:

Dr. Johanna Bruckner (University of Stuttgart) discussed the rational design of ordered mesoporous materials with tunable pore size and surface acidity via direct liquid crystal templating.

Dr. Patrick Probst (University of Stuttgart) presented work on ring-expansion metathesis polymerization under confinement and the control of molecular weight in cyclic polymers.

Samuel Van Gele (Max-Planck Institute for Solid State Research) explored structural effects of post-synthetic linkage modification in COF-366-Co catalysts.

At the Universität Stuttgart booth, connecting with conference participants.

Through a poster and talk by Yasemin Polikar, MBA, on engaging new target groups in SciComm, featuring our exhibition “Was kann Katalyse?” as a hands-on example.

With an interactive workshop by Samuel Van Gele, in collaboration with Juliane Braig from the theatre group Kanonenfutter and Isabella Kessel from the Landeshauptstadt Stuttgart, exploring ImprovTheatre as an innovative approach to science communication.

More than fifteen participants – mainly postdocs and junior group leaders – took part in the event to learn about the essentials of grant writing. The program offered insights into all stages of proposal development, from the first concept to the final submission.

Lectures were given by DFG program coordinators (technical chemistry), professors who serve as reviewers, and a recent ERC Starting Grant winner, who shared valuable experiences and strategies for preparing competitive funding applications.

The CRC 1333 was invited to join the workshop, and Jun.-Prof. Dr. Kenichi Endo (Seed 6) participated to prepare for the upcoming next funding round application of the Collaborative Research Centre.

Workshops like this provide an excellent opportunity for early-career researchers to strengthen their skills and gain confidence in transforming innovative research ideas into successful proposals – an essential step in advancing collaborative research within the CRC 1333 and beyond.

On September 18 & 19, 2025, doctoral candidates and postdocs from CRC 1333, SimTech, and the University of Stuttgart’s Bioinformatics program took part in the course FAIR Analysis and Parametrization of Reaction Kinetics”, led by Prof. Johann M. Rohwer, who is currently visiting from Stellenbosch University.

Over two intensive days, participants explored how reaction kinetics can be analyzed and modeled in a reproducible and transparent way, following FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data principles. A particular focus was placed on the NMRPy software, developed by Prof. Rohwer and CRC doctoral researcherTorsten Giess, which enables the automated evaluation of kinetic analyses using NMR data. Together, participants worked step by step through the different aspects of the software and applied it to example datasets.

The course provided an excellent opportunity for interdisciplinary exchange and for gaining practical experience with open-source tools for data analysis and kinetic modeling.

Each year, Nobel Prize laureates meet with young researchers from around the world at the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting to foster scientific exchange across generations. Participation in this renowned event is by invitation only and recognizes outstanding young scientists from a range of disciplines.

Following the 74th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, which took place from 29 June to 4 July 2025 and focused on chemistry, 18 selected participants joined a one-week study tour through Baden-Württemberg organized by Baden-Württemberg International. As part of this program, the group visited the University of Stuttgart on 8 July 2025.

The visit began with a welcome by Dr. Wolfgang Holtkamp, Senior Advisor for International Affairs at the University of Stuttgart, followed by an introduction to the Faculty of Chemistry by Prof. Cosima Stubenrauch, Dean of the Faculty. She presented an overview of current research activities, including the CRC 1333, among other interdisciplinary projects.

Afterwards, Prof. Deven Estes, Deputy Spokesperson and Prinicipal Investigator of CRC 1333, guided the visitors through the laboratories. The tour provided insights into ongoing research within the Collaborative Research Center and offered an opportunity for exchange on topics related to catalysis and molecular materials.

The Summer School began with a visit to Evonik Industries in Rheinfelden, where participants gained an in-depth look into the company’s research and production activities. After an introduction of the CRC 1333 by doctoral researcher Selina Itzigehl and a safety briefing by Evonik, company representatives provided an overview of their work on silane production, building protection materials, and research and development in functional materials.

A guided tour through the production plants offered fascinating insights into large-scale industrial processes, followed by discussions with employees from R&D and sales. The visit concluded with an open Q&A session about career opportunities for young scientists.

After traveling to Rottweil, Germany’s oldest town, the program continued with a series of talks and workshops. The morning opened with a lecture by Muneshwar Nandeshwar on “Cooperative Catalysis Under Confinement” and a presentation by Sofia Kolin on “Molecular determinations of solvent nanoseparation by nanoporous carbon materials.”

Two poster sessions provided opportunities for lively discussions, while Fabian Heck’s Sorption Workshop on “Gas Adsorption: Why We Do Not Measure BET” invited hands-on learning and debate. In the afternoon, participants explored Rottweil during an outdoor escape game or a photo challenge before gathering again for a quiz night organized by Liam Rautenbach.

The final day focused on career skills with an interactive CV and networking workshop by Rob Thompson. Participants discussed how to make a strong impression during job applications and how to build professional networks effectively — a session that received enthusiastic feedback for its practical advice and relaxed atmosphere
