<p>As part of the TRACES initiative at the University of Stuttgart, the scholarship will support the further development of Misha’s startup idea in sustainable water treatment. The program is funded by the German Federal Government and co-financed by the European Social Fund Plus (ESF Plus).</p>

<p>We are delighted to announce that CRC 1333 Principal Investigator <a href="https://www.fkf.mpg.de/lotsch">Prof. Bettina Lotsch</a> has received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize for 2025.</p>



<p>She was honored for her groundbreaking work in solid-state chemistry, particularly in the development of innovative materials for sustainable energy applications. <p>The Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize, awarded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), is Germany’s most prestigious research award. Established in 1985, the Leibniz Programme honors outstanding scientists, enhances their research opportunities, and supports the employment of qualified early-career researchers. Winners receive up to €2.5 million to fund their projects. Nominees are proposed by third parties, and the final selection is made by the Joint Committee, based on recommendations from the Selection Committee&nbsp;for the Leibniz Programme.</p>

<p>AdvanceScience is a two-year mentoring program in a 1-on-1 format for postdocs, habilitation candidates, and junior research group leaders offered by GRADUS at the University of Stuttgart. In 1-on-1 mentoring, a mentee is brought together with an experienced mentor from the areas of academia, business, or society for a hierarchy-free, periodic exchange. Mentee and mentor define bilaterally how to work together during the mentoring.&nbsp;</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>About the ZIA &#8220;Visible Women in Science&#8221; Fellowship Program</strong></h5>



<p>The ZIA &#8220;Visible Women in Science&#8221; Fellowship Program is a year-long initiative designed to support female scientists in their professional and personal development. Through collaboration with partners, supporters, and sponsors, the program focuses on empowering women, fostering networking opportunities, and enhancing science communication skills.</p>



<p>Throughout the year, fellows will participate in various activities, including networking events and workshops. One key aspect is the Nawik science communication workshop, which helps participants learn how to communicate their research effectively—making it accessible and easy to understand for a broader audience. Although all fellows are researchers, they come from diverse disciplines, contributing a wide range of expertise to the program.</p>



<p>The fellows and their research will be showcased in an article in the December 2024 issue of <a href="https://www.zeit-verlagsgruppe.de/produkte/">DIE ZEIT</a>, both in print and online on the ZIA website. Additionally, each fellow will participate in an audio interview that will be published on the ZIA website.</p>

<p>On September 11, 2024, CRC 1333 Board Members, Principal Investigators, post-docs and members of the Management Team participated in a diversity training on equality, anti-discrimination, gender and diversity. The workshop was organized by <a href="https://kompetenz-entwicklung.de/">Dr. Iris Koall Kompetenzentwicklung</a> and facilitated by two trainers: <a href="https://www.anglistik.uni-wuppertal.de/en/staff/detail/muwanga/">Dr. Mariam Muwanga</a> from the University of Wuppertal and her colleague <a href="https://www.haw-hamburg.de/en/university/employees/detail/person/person/show/michael-tunc/">Prof. Dr. Michael Tunç</a>, from the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The workshop dealt with the basic concept of anti-discrimination, gender and diversity. A thorough analysis shed light on the functions of prejudice and stereotypes in the field of gender and diversity. This raised awareness of biases, perception and how to deal with prejudice and identified the formation of “us” and “them” groups. An intersectional perspective was introduced to explore the social dimensions of diversity and to understand the importance of intersectionality in the research context. Diversity and gender in the work environment, with particular emphasis on organic perspectives and work structures was discussed.</p>



<p>The workshop ended with a very insightful group work to identify what gender and diversity policies we already have in place at the CRC 1333,&nbsp; if they are working or if there is still room for improvement and what the next steps might be.</p>



<p>This was particularly helpful we look forward to future workshops on this topic.</p>

<p>Patricia will be staying at the <a href="https://www.osaka-u.ac.jp/en">University of Osaka </a>in Japan for two months starting in February 2025, to work on her research project &#8220;Immobilization of functional metal catalysts in mesoporous carbon powders and films for the catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide&#8221; within the working group of <a href="https://rd.iai.osaka-u.ac.jp/en/656f30eaa4cefc3e.html">Prof. Shigeyuki Masaoka.</a><br /><br />The <a href="http://www.chem.eng.osaka-u.ac.jp/masaoka_lab/english/research.html">Masaoka Group</a> s prominently known for the development of functional metal complexes for CO2 reduction and insertion reactions. The ongoing research of anchored molecular catalysts on ordered mesoporous carbon materials (Fe-por@OMC) for electrochemical CO2 reduction reactions (eCO2RR), carried out in collaboration with the Sarkar and Klemm group, could be complemented by the metal catalysts of the Masaoka group, which are of interest to the CRC 1333 for the understanding of the confinement effect.</p>

<p>On April 25, 2024 we welcomed five 9th grade students, who participated in our Girls&#8217; Day Workshop “Entdecke die Welt der Kunststoffe!”, organized by the CRC 1333 and the Institute of Polymer Chemistry at the University of Stuttgart.</p>



<p>After an overview of the basics of plastics production and processing along with some insights on the work done at the Universiy of Stuttgart by <a href="https://www.ipoc.uni-stuttgart.de/msf/">Prof. Dr. Michael Buchmeiser</a>, the girls were met by three of our CRC 1333 doctoral students: Boshra Atwi, Patricia Sonnenberg and Patrick Probst.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After watching doctoral student <a href="https://www.ipoc.uni-stuttgart.de/msf/team-Buchmeiser/Probst-00001/">Patrick Probst</a> perform a cyclopolymerization experiment in the glove box, the girls were able to get a feel for the day-to-day work of a chemist by trying their hand at working in a glove box.</p>

<p>Doctoral student <a href="https://www.ipoc.uni-stuttgart.de/msf/team-Buchmeiser/Atwi/">Boshra Atwi </a>showed the girls how to make polyurethane foam by mixing polyol with water and then adding hexamethylene diisocyanate. The girls were able to stir the mixture with a wooden stick until the reaction started and after about ten seconds and the foam was created.</p>

<p>CRC 1333 doctoral student <a href="https://www.ipoc.uni-stuttgart.de/pcs/team/Sonnenberg/">Patricia Sonnenberg </a>showed the girls how to perform the &#8220;nylon thread trick&#8221; and make polyamide. Hexamethylene diamine, water, and phenolphthalein are mixed in a beaker. The solution is then carefully overlaid with a solution of sebacic acid dichloride in cyclohexane. The skin that forms at the phase boundary is removed with tweezers and attached to a glass rod. The girls were then able to wound a &#8220;nylon rope&#8221; onto the glass rod by twisting.</p>



<p>The day was rounded off with snacks and talks with our CRC 1333 doctoral students about the study programs at the Faculty of Chemistry and career opportunities. The day was a complete success and we would like to thank all participants for the great workshop. </p>



<p>We are already looking forward to Girls&#8217; Day 2025!</p>

<p>Congratulations to Carina Herrle for winning the CRC 1333 Bachelor Prize for 2023. Her bachelor thesis on &#8220;Ordered mesoporous metal oxides via true liquid crystal templating: synthesis and characterization“, carried out at the University of Stuttgart, Department of Physical Chemistry in the working group of <a href="https://www.ipc.uni-stuttgart.de/research/bruckner/">Dr. Johanna Bruckner</a>, has impressed the CRC 1333 board.</p>



<p>Carina Herrle presented her work during the CRC 1333 Colloquium on April 18, 2024 and received her prize, which is endowed with 500 €, from Prof. Dr. Michael Buchmeiser, spokesperson of the CRC 1333.</p>

<p>During this colloquium session, the CRC 1333 Master Prize 2023 was also awarded to CRC 1333 doctoral researcher Samuel van Gele. His master thesis on &#8220;Post-functionalization of Porphyrinic Covalent Organic Frameworks for Electrochemical Carbon Dioxide Reduction&#8221; carried out at the Max-Planck Institute for Solid State Research in the working group of <a href="https://www.fkf.mpg.de/lotsch">Prof. Dr. Bettina Lotsch</a>, convinced the CRC 1333 board. </p>



<p>The CRC 1333 Master Prize is awarded to young scientists whose scientific work (in the context of a master thesis) has made an outstanding contribution to the goals of the CRC 1333, namely to identify and understand the controlling effects of defined geometries in catalysis. The prize, which was handed over by CRC 1333 spokesperson Prof. Dr. Michael Buchmeiser, is endowed with 1.000 €.</p>

<p>On March 14, 2024, members of the CRC 1333 participated in a full-day diversity training organized by the University of Stuttgart’s initiative “<a href="https://www.uni-stuttgart.de/universitaet/organisation/leitung/stabsstellen/gleichstellungsreferat/pooling" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pooling – Synergies for equal opportunities</a>“. The workshop. facilitated by <a href="https://melaniebittner.de/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Melanie Bittne</a>r, focused on fostering awareness and competence in dealing with diversity in research and academic environments.</p>



<p>For the CRC 1333, Principal Investigator Prof. Joris van Slageren (Projects&nbsp;<a href="https://www.crc1333.de/research/projects/tuning-c6-c8-selectivity-of-cr-catalyzed-oligomerization-of-ethylene-by-exploiting-confinement-effects/">B04</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.crc1333.de/research/projects/multiprobe-development-and-spectroscopy/">C02</a>); Prof. Niels Hansen (Projects&nbsp;<a href="https://www.crc1333.de/research/projects/atomistic-simulations-and-fluid-theory/">C05</a>,<a href="https://www.crc1333.de/research/projects/in-silico-design-of-biomimetic-scaffolds/">&nbsp;Seed 5</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.crc1333.de/research/projects/f-a-i-r-data-management-in-molecular-heterogeneous-catalysis-inf/">INF</a>); Prof. Alexander Schlaich (Project&nbsp;<a href="https://www.crc1333.de/research/projects/covalent-organic-frameworks-as-tailored-substrates-with-molecularly-defined-pores-for-molecular-heterogeneous-catalysis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">A03</a>), Dr. Sadia Noor (Project&nbsp;<a href="https://www.crc1333.de/research/projects/regulation-of-molecular-heterogeneous-organocatalysis-by-dynamic-confinement-in-soft-porous-crystals/">A08</a>) as well as Dorothea Häussermann and Yasemin Polikar from the CRC 1333 Management Office took part.</p>



<p>The participants explored key diversity dimensions such as gender, age, race, class, sexuality, disability, religion, and care responsibilities. Through discussions, exercises, and case studies, the group examined how these aspects shape daily work, collaboration, and institutional structures.</p>



<p>The training also provided space to reflect on existing diversity measures within CRC 1333 – including family-friendly working hours, childcare at events, a diversity board, and a 40% target quota for female PhD researchers – and to develop new ideas for further action. Suggestions included integrating diversity elements into CRC meetings, introducing all-gender toilets, enhancing communication practices, and offering mentoring and training opportunities.</p>



<p>By participating in this workshop, CRC 1333 members reinforced their commitment to creating an inclusive research environment where everyone can contribute and thrive.</p>

<p>We are very excited to once again offer a leadership program specifically for our CRC 1333 female scientists. The seminars will be held by Dr. Sabine Horst from the coaching agency <a href="https://www.quintesentio.de/">QuinteSentio</a> and have been developed in cooperation with the CRC 1333 to best meet the needs of the participants.</p>



<p>The (Self-) Leadership Program consists of two parts:</p>

<li><strong>1. Mindset and Inner Work &#8211; </strong>an online program based on resilience and mindfulness consisting of eight online sessions in 2024.</li>
